She grew up in a slum and suffered 16 fractures and more than 8 surgeries. Still, he did not lose courage and achieved a new position by becoming a IAS.
Ummul Kher, a resident of Pali, Rajasthan, was handicapped since childhood. Even her family members had distanced themselves from her, but she did not panic. She chose her own destination and prepared the way accordingly.
Study and IAS journey
Ummul Kher not only faced financial difficulties in her life but also got separated from her family. She decided her own path. Ummul scored 91 percent in 10th and 90 percent in 12th. She graduated in Psychology from Gargi College, University of Delhi then did his MA and MPhil from the School of International Studies, JNU. In 2014, he was selected for the International Leadership Training Program in Japan.
In the history of 18 years, Ummul was the fourth Indian to be selected for this. After MPhil, Ummul cleared JRF. She started preparing for UPSC exam during JRF. She secured 420th rank in her first attempt in UPSC 2016 exam.
A life full of fractures and surgeries
Ummul Kher is suffering from Bone Fragile Disorder, in which the bones of the body become weak. Due to Bone Fragile Disorder, his bones used to break many times. He has suffered a total of 16 fractures and 8 surgeries in his life.
Poor economic condition
IAS Ummul Kher comes from an economically backward Marwari family in Pali, Rajasthan. Ummul’s family consists of his parents and three brothers and sisters. Due to lack of job, father came to Delhi to make a living. His father used to sell clothes. Her family used to live in a slum in Nizamuddin area of Delhi. But the slums were razed in 2001, due to which her family became homeless. Then her family started living in the slum area of Trilokpuri. When she was in 9th standard, her father had remarried after her mother death.

Ummul’s new mother did not like her going to school. She could not give up studies and so she left home and started living alone. Ummul was a promising student. She wanted to become something after studying. But the family’s financial condition was not good. Due to which, Ummul started teaching tuition to complete her studies. She used to spend the fees she received from it in her studies.
Ummul kept on preparing for UPSC by overcoming all the difficulties. She passed the UPSC exam in her first attempt in the year 2017 on the basis of her hard work. Today the story of Ummul’s struggle is inspiring for crores of youth.
