Bhim Army (Bahujan Social Organization) and Chandrashekhar Azad

Bhim Army is a social organization which raises voice against the atrocities on Dalits. Chandrashekhar Azad is the national president of this army. Bhim Army started from Saharanpur. Gradually people from Dalit community from all over India started joining it. In today’s article, we will tell how it started and how it works.

Introduction to Bhim Army Organization

Bhim Army is an organization which was formed to stop the injustice done to the people of Dalit society. It was formed with the aim of stopping the atrocities on the people of Dalit society and giving them rights. Today many people of Dalit society have joined this organization. It is named after Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar. It is also known as Ambedkar Sena. This organization came into limelight from Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh. Today this organization is also working in Haryana, Punjab. It’s slogan is Jai Bhim and its favorite color is blue.

Founder of Bhim Army

It is a Bahujan social organization,  was founded in 2015 by Satish Kumar, Vinay Ratan Singh and Chandrashekhar Azad. It is said that its founder was Satish Kumar, a resident of Chhutmalpur. When he met Chandrashekhar Azad, he made him  the president of the Bhim Army.

How did Bhim Army start?

Chandrashekhar Azad founded it in 2015 to oppose caste oppression. But this organization came into limelight in 2016 for protesting against the discrimination and beating of Dalit students in AHP Inter College, Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Rajputs dominated in that college. Dalits were discriminated against. Even there was a separate arrangement of water for them. After this Chandrashekhar Azad gathered the Dalits there and fought for their rights and ended the supremacy of the Rajputs. This college became a center of inspiration for the Bhim Army. It also runs a free school for Dalits in Bhadon village of Saharanpur. This organization works for the emancipation of Dalits through education.

Popularity

On May 5, 2017, there was violence between Rajputs and Dalits in Shabbirpur village, 25 km from Saharanpur, in which 25 houses of Dalits were burnt. When demonstrations were held against this violence, the police put 37 people in jail. After this case, the Bhim Army under the leadership of Chandrashekhar protested at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. Then a large number of Dalit community people had gathered with them. Seeing the presence of a large number of people, everyone was stunned and they became famous by the name of Bhim Army.

Other protest

In August 2019, the Bhim Army participated in a nationwide Dalit protest against the demolition of Sri Guru Ravidas Gurghar, a temple dedicated to Saint Ravidas, on the orders of the Delhi Development Authority. Apart from this, in 2020, he and 500 Bhim Army members were arrested for the protest the Hathras gang rape. In which the police arrested him for violation of section 144 and several sections of the Epidemic Diseases Act.

Chandrashekhar Azad

Chandrashekhar Azad was born on 3 December 1986 in Ghadkauli village, Saharanpur. His father’s name is Govardhan Das and mother’s name is Kamlesh Devi, his father is a retired teacher and mother is a house wife. These are five siblings. The names of his brothers are Bharat Singh and Kamal Kishor. He is a law graduate from DAV PG College, Dehradun. Chandrokhar is an Ambedkarite and is also the National President of Bhim Army. Time magazine included him in its annual list of 100 rising leaders in February 2021. He came as a Bahujan leader following a hoarding that read “Great Chamar Welcome you of Gadkhauli”. He has established himself as a Dalit icon.
