# Force of Gravity: It’s what keeps us down

## Whenever an object falls towards the earth, a force acts behind it which pulls the object towards the earth. This force is called gravitational force. Everything on the earth rests on the earth because of the force of gravity.

Whenever an object falls towards the earth, a force acts behind it which pulls the object towards the earth. This force is called gravitational force. Everything on the earth rests on the earth because of the force of gravity.

The force of gravity binds the entire universe. Gravitational force brings many gases of the universe to one place, with the help of which stars are formed. These stars are attracted to each other due to gravitational force and the Milky Way is formed. The earth is revolving around the sun and the moon circling the earth. All this is possible only because of the force of gravity. All the planets of the solar system are revolving around the Sun.

The force of gravity was discovered by Sir Isaac Newton. What is this gravitational force and on what principle does it work? let us try to find out in this article.

## Discovery Of Gravitational Force

In the 16th century, before Isaac Newton’s theory of gravity, the great Italian scientist Galileo Galilei told from an experiment that an object falling towards the earth falls with a constant acceleration. Galileo tried to convey his theory of constant acceleration to the world by dropping balls from the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy.

After this, Newton discovered the force of gravity. In one of his books written by William Stukeley, a disciple of Isaac Newton, the incident of apple falling has been mentioned. William Stukeley writes that once Newton was sitting under an apple tree. Then suddenly an apple fruit falls in front of them. One thought in Newton’s mind was why did the fruit of Kaundha come on the earth only and what is the force that is pulling the apple towards the earth. Newton took this phenomenon to mean that this earth has the power of attraction which pulls objects towards itself.

## What is Gravity

According to Newton, all the bodies of the universe attract each other. The force of attraction between two objects is called gravitational force. If one of these objects is the earth, then this force of attraction is called gravity. That is, gravity is the force of attraction by which the earth pulls any object towards its center.

## Newton’s law of gravitation

Whenever two bodies of equal mass are placed at a distance from each other, the force of attraction acting between the bodies is proportional to the product of the masses of the bodies and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them. Gravitational principle works on the basis of the above law.

## Gravitational Theory by Sir Albert Einstein

Sir Albert Einstein has also described the force of gravity in his ‘General Theory of Relativity’. According to Sir Albert Einstein, gravity is not a force but it is the result of ‘curvature of spacetime’, which is due to the ‘uneven distribution’ of mass.
